June 6, 2007. D-Day. What better way to honor the many young americans who gave their lives so many years go, than to play a rare Wednesday show at Oasis in West Chicago with our "friends" Chunnel of Love.
It truely was a night to remember. If you were there, you know what I am talking about. If you weren't there, Let me set the scene.
Excitement crackled in the Hookah smoke-filled air as the 15 and 16-year old looking 21 year olds entered the club. This was not your normal "enter and leave at your leisure" establishment. No. This was a place that demanded higher standards. Just as you wouldnt enter and leave as the CSO played your favorite four movement Symphony by Beethoven. No one could leave as CUP played classic opus Deep in Love (movements I and II).
While the mantenence staff was cleaning up the blood left over from the first band,
CUP took the stage and quickly sound checked with their new idea "that last band sucked, this next band sucks". It went well. The show had some highlights as well. Let me tell you about some of them. oh... here's one: We played Brad Needs a Girlfriend for the first time (practice or show) in over a year. It's always nice to see the reaction of people in the audience when they first get the joke of "brad, brad, brad, brad... GIRLFRIEND" What a treat. ... what else? hmmm...
This was also the world Premiere performance of "I Need You". That went pretty well. I noticed that chord progression at the end doesnt lend itself easily to a rockin solo. I am going to have to come up with something new during that part rather than the usual garbage I do.
After a dedication and disclaimer from Jeff Harstead, we closed our portion with fan favorite Don't touch the blood. After that song, I heard one of the guys from the first band say "Genious, we need more rapping in our stuff". That almost made me feel good, like one of those people that has someone else tear down for them.
After legendary recording artists, Chunnel of Love appointed us with their set, they then dis-appointed us by not going to the after party. I'll quickly give them a sample of what they missed: Franch.
After dinner at steak N shake, I left for home contemplating what the Circle of 5ths was and noticed that a cop was pulling me over as I entered a gas station. Did you know that you can't pump gas while a cop is writing you a warning for having a head light out? you have to sit in your car. and wait.
and wait.
and listen to a CD that harstead made for you with string players playing Dream Theater songs.
Enjoy your youth,
